Press Release from AWE June 16, 2007 Program
The awesome Asian Pacific Women Entrepreneurs did it again!
On Saturday, 16 June 2007, the Asian Women Entrepreneurs (AWE) organized a breakfast workshop at the Southern California Edison (SCE) headquarters in Rosemead, California. This event was sponsored by SCE, featuring two prominent speakers covering the areas of Workers Compensation and Labor issues and legal updates.
More than 60 people attended the breakfast workshop, AWE members, SCE invited guests, and key members from the Filipino Chamber, the Global Federation of Chinese Business Women Association, and representatives from others businesses arrived in the early morning hours and were treated to a hearty breakfast and coffee so generously provided by our sponsor, thanks to the coordinating effort of Grace Whitcomb, Diversity Manager of SCE.
The early session of the workshop was presented by Ms. Theresa Muir, Director of Workers’ Compensation, and a top management position at SCE with more than 30 years experience in her specialized field. Ms. Muir’s PowerPoint presentations cover the historical enactment of the state law dated back to 1913! Other discussion topics are:
- Workers compensation insurance
- Basic benefits
- Who has to be covered?
- Insurance coverage and rate making
- Employer Penalties
- Reform legislation
- Controlling costs
- Legislative outlook
Ms. Muir’s presentation was considered by everyone attendee to be foremost informative and educative as the current workers compensation issues and pending state legislatures have significant impacts, affecting every small business owner having employee payrolls to deal with. If you want a copy of the presentation, please make a request on AWE’s website, www.aweoc.com.
The second presentation was Ms. Jenny Erwin, Regional Director, and Women’s Bureau, U. S. Department of Labor. Ms. Erwin made a very special effort to travel from San Francisco to be our featured speaker. The presence of this highest ranking representative from the Labor Department would not have been possible without AWE’s founders’ remarkable contribution in her outstanding networking and public relations skills.
Ms. Erwin’s discussion topics relating to the area of Asian Women in Business are both interesting and informative. The audience, representing 99% women-owned business, with a handful of men in business, was fascinated and up beat by Ms. Erwin’s presentation. Here statistics about Asian women-owned businesses and the fast growing trends in this area simply filled the room with enthusiasm and excitement. Issues covered by the Regional Director of Women’s Bureau include:
- Great opportunities for women in business today
- Changes in the workplace – more women in the labor force
- Gains for women in education
- Advances for women in business; improvements for women of color in business
- Firms majority owned by Asian Americans in the U. S., 2006
- One third of all Asian-owned businesses are in California
- Industries of Asian American women-owned firms in 2006
- California women in business and SBA provides resources for women in business
The breakfast workshop came to a happy ending with presentation of gifts to our distinctive feature speakers. The sales of raffle tickets for opportunity drawings for prizes were generously donated by SCE and AWE members.
The next meeting will be held on Saturday, August 18, and will be hosted by our own member, Ning Umandap of Velur Enterprises, Inc. located in Van Nuys. All AWE is urged to attend to learn how to build wealth through land investment, especially to learn from Ning the secret of “Today’s Dirt is Tomorrow’s Gold!” For further information, please visit AWE’s website.
Those who could not attend AWE’s 6/16/2007 breakfast workshop have missed out the enormous opportunity to learn from experts in the important areas of state-mandate workers compensation and today’s trends in women-owned businesses, especially in the Asian women-owned businesses and resources available to assist these small business owners. All of AWE’s board members are making every effort to bring to our members a high level of quality, value-based workshops by top-notch speakers with entrepreneurial expertise, assisting our members to grow successfully in their businesses or respective profession. Your participation at the AWE scheduled meetings and workshops will greatly encourage your board members to work harder to provide meaningful and valuable programs as benefits to our AWE membership. Thanks!
